Moving is a part of life, whether we like it or not. It’s estimated that the typical American moves about 12 times over the course of their life, and the typical 30 year old has already moved six times. We move for job opportunities, to combine households, and sometimes just because we want a change of scenery. There are, of course, different options on the table when it comes to how you’ll handle your move — which can make it all the more daunting. Understandably, many of us are reluctant to begin the moving process, even when we have no choice. In some cases, if you’re moving due to a job change, your employer will provide you with a relocation package — and in that case, it’s possible that you may not be able to choose which moving company will help you. However, in many cases it’s up to you; should you work with local movers or try to handle the process yourself? While it may be tempting to try to move on your own, there are so many benefits of working with reliable movers. And once we’re done with them, we think you’ll agree that working with local movers easily beats out trying to handle the process on your own.

1. Moving Costs

One of the main arguments people have for handling moving on their own is the claim that it will save them money. In fact, you may end up spending much more in the long term if you try to move on your own. This is because a professional company has a better idea of how moving expenses break down, and is able to offer a flat package deal that will be what it will be. Whereas, if you budget out your move on your own, you may discover that there are extra, unexpected expenses to worry about. What may begin as a relatively inexpensive process can quickly get out of hand as your moving day progresses, especially if there are any hiccups along the way — which there often can be with inexperienced movers. Experienced local movers, on the other hand, offer a scenario in which you know what you’re getting into. For that matter, they usually have contacts in place with most cost-efficient companies, whereas, when you’re renting out vehicles and equipment piece by piece, you may end up paying more for things that could be found at a cheaper rate. Ultimately, you get more bang for your buck when working with professional local movers.

2. Professionalism

It’s hard to make moving stress-free. But it is certainly more stressful to move when you’re handling it on your own. So much can go wrong — if you don’t handle a box correctly, it can fall, leaving whatever precious thing you were worried about broken. Other issues that can come up with moving include packing objects incorrectly, forgetting something, or even an injury. The fact is that professional movers are experienced in a way that amateurs just can’t be, and they’re able to avoid some of the pitfalls that can occur when people move on their own. For that matter, while moving isn’t out of sight out of mind when you leave it professional, it’s as close to that as it can be! You can focus on your part of the move while the movers handle the actual physical process. It makes for a much smoother process.

3. Trust

Of course, some people don’t try to move by themselves — but they still don’t work with professionals. Beware the temptation to hire the person advertising their moving services as an individual or a small, amateur group on the Internet. Don’t just hire the neighbor kid either! Not only could you be on the hook if these people get hurt; you always can’t be sure that they’re trustworthy. When working with professional movers, you’ll not only know that they know what they’re doing, but that they can be trusted to handle your belongings with care and ensure that your move is as easy as possible.
