October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

This month, we’re highlighting Mary’s Place and their work with domestic violence survivors. The prevalence of domestic violence in our country is all-too-often undiscussed, so take a moment to educate yourself and learn how you can help. Domestic violence cuts across all economic, educational, and cultural demographics in the US. Statistics provided by the National Domestic Violence Hotline indicate that approximately 10 million Americans experience some form of domestic violence every year.

Adam's Moving Service Mary's Place Domestic Violence Seattle

Adam’s Moving Service has partnered with Mary’s Place, a Seattle-based emergency shelter and resource center for homeless women and children that serves many survivors of domestic violence or abuse. Often, mothers and children must leave dangerous situations quickly, which can lead to gaps in education, employment, and homelessness. Mary’s Place offers safe shelter, a warm bed, and extensive resources for these families, including counseling and help transitioning into new housing.

Domestic Violence Statistics in Washington

The National Census of Domestic Violence Resources partners with local providers to gather data on services by state. Their most recent dataset from 2016 offers some shocking insights into domestic violence in Seattle and our other urban centers, as well as rural areas across the state. The report indicates that in a single day in Washington:

  • 413 domestic violence victims found refuge in emergency shelters or transitional housing provided by local domestic violence programs.
  • 892 adults and children received domestic violence advocacy and services other than shelter, including support and counseling, help finding or retaining permanent housing, and legal advocacy.
  • 803 callers contacted state and local domestic violence hotlines for information, support and safety planning, averaging 33 hotline calls per hour.
  • 732 requests from domestic violence survivors were turned down because programs lacked adequate resources to provide emergency shelter, housing, transportation, childcare, legal advocacy, and other services.
